War is one of the most controversial subjects in the modern era. The debate surrounding many of the United States military's endeavors to rid the world of our enemies has risen dramatically in the last 50 years. The Vietnam war for instance was one of the most hated and protested wars in recent history as well as the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. So the question remains should the United States go to war with other nations like these or should we never look at this as an option again.
The "only" war the US is currently engaged in right now is the Afghanistan conflict with the Taliban. This isn't so much a war as it is an occupation of enemy territory. There have been no major conflicts with this group as the Taliban continues to operate like a terrorist organization. This I believe is a just cause because terrorism is war-like and causes unnecessary death and destruction. One has to fight fire with fire when it comes to this kind of cruel random violence. But is it worth the lives of many of our own soldiers?
The reason Vietnam was so unpopular was because so many troops died for a cause many believed unjust or unimportant. War is usually unpopular unless injustice is occurring, and that is the only wars that the United States needs to fight in are wars against dangerous organizations or countries with mass murdering lunatics as dictators. There are alternatives to war and because of this unless the country we go to war with is a threat to us or many other weaker countries around it, we should not go to war.
