MY BIGGEST FEAR

IMAGINE:
A 6 foot tall south asian woman with a degree in medicine, a childhood in a third world country, lips mouthing the word "doctor", and a wooden spoon in one hand, cocked back ready for attack.
This woman is my mother.
Of all the ghost and ghouls and monsters and demons in the world, the thing that scares me the most is my mother, Momma Qazi
Her degree confirms that she is a well educated, independent woman, not to be trifled with for her knowledge is not to be mistaken for ignorance. Her childhood in a third world country suggests a past filled with living with the necessities, not understanding what American culture is, constant criticism, and corporal punishment. Her lips mouthing the word 'doctor' makes clear her one goal for her children, and the dismissal of any other hope, dream, or aspiration. And her wooden spoon serves as her means to assert her authority over the poor, defenseless Harris.
