War: What is it good for?
War: it is such a powerful word with a strong connotation of violence and genocide. What was once a land dispute or power struggle has now become a means of getting what you want in geopolitics, yet it is now established in the global system so can it be erased? In all honesty, probably not, countries and individuals will always feel the need to fight their adversary when something does not go their way i.e. the US invading Iraq when oil supplies were not guaranteed or Nazi Germany invading western Europe because it refused to bow to German demands. Of course, war is not morally right especially in recent decades, but many things that we see daily in the world around us are not "morally right." I think that it is unfathomable to have a world without war unless we were all ruled by totalitarian dictatorships, which no one would like. Pure and simple, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Moreover, countries sometimes do have a responsibility to go to war to protect their interests when all else fails, for example, it may not be a popular idea, but I believe that the United States was fully justified when it entered Afghanistan in order to protect America from future terrorists who were living in a country that was engulfed by tribal warfare without a clear government. While that was justified, I do not believe that the War in Iraq was justified because it neither advanced American interests abroad nor gave the US a better reputation in the region. All we received was some possibly discounted oil (hurrah?), but that is when other players like the United Nations can hope to play a role in avoiding war if possible and the International Court of Justice can sentence those who break the laws that hope to prevent wars. While they could be more effective, we are in a pretty good place right now, the UN sanctions have been effective on Iran and North Korea is irrelevant because of their own greed, and the ICJ hopes to stop Sudan from committing more war crimes while also recently sentencing criminals from the Yugoslavia conflict. We can hope for more, but I think we are definitely on the right track to limit war while it can never be eradicated.
