Just a White Guy Who Loves Rap Music

Yes, its true. Andrew Mason is a fan of rap music. I know I know, you say, "How can such a swell young man like that kind of music?" Well, I don't know. I just kind of fell in love with it a few years ago and here we are. I don't so much as like the newer hip/hop music like 2 Chainz and Rick Ross and such as I do the classics. I enjoy a creative rhyme and the ability to use words to tell a story more than I like people telling me about their alcoholism and sexual history. Yet I digress. I use my iPod everyday to listen to music. I mostly use it when I am doing homework or getting ready for bed, but I also listen to music while in the car as well. Being a fan of rap music, I have compiled a list of 5 songs that are just plain good rappin'. This isn't a pump up playlist or a go to sleep playlist, but just a good rap playlist.

In no particular order:

1. Definition- Black Star. Mos Def and Talib Kweli formed a hip-hop duo in 1998 that put out one album as somewhat of a response to the death of Biggie Smalls and Tupac. This song boasts very strong lyrics, like this line from Kweli: "Consider me the entity within the industry without a history of spittin' the epitome of stupidity", which just shows you the power of their lyrics along with their ability to say something within them.
2. B.O.B- Outkast. The southern players from Atlanta are one of hip-hop's best, and Andre 3000 kills his part in this song. It is so upbeat and fastpaced that you will have to listen to it about 30 times before you can hear all the words they are saying. Definitely check this one out.
3. Juicy- The Notorious B.I.G. Biggie Smalls was the man before his death, and this song is somewhat of a story of how he changed his life from struggling on the streets to making it big in the music list. The lyrics are simple, but the rhymes and the strong delivery make this song a timeless classic.
4. 4th Chamber- GZA the Genius. One of my all-time favorites is a song with a strong beat that GZA, a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, gives this line to end the song: "Now watch me blow them out of shoes without clues, because I won't hesitate to detonate I'm short-fused". Thats just good writing, and there's not much that can beat this album titled Liquid Swords.
5. Rock Bottom- Eminem. Marshall Mather's first real studio album, The Slim Shady LP, captured the attention of the class, but this song was a little under-rated. It talks about his struggle as he was trying to make it as an artist, feed his daughter, and his relationship struggles. Eminem, throughout his career, has been noted for his amazing lyrics, and this song is no exception. Slim Shady delivers rhymes that will wow you.

So now you know that this white guy can bump with the best of them, and that I really like talking about music. Sorry if this music offends you, but just know that its the power of the way these artists string words together that captivate me, not necessarily the way they live their lives. If you like rap music, check out these songs and more songs by these artists, you will not be dissapointed.
