How would your life be different if you had grown up 20 years earlier?
Well for one, instead of wasting all my time on my computer, I would probably be spending my time being productive. Working harder on homework, spending more time actually talking to friends rather then texting or facebook messaging them. (I don’t really like twitter.) I also wouldn’t have the world at my hand through my iphone. I wouldn’t be able to look up what the weather is in Paris when I’m in the middle of nowhere. I also wouldn’t be able to get out of those awkward conversations (that you don’t know how to get away from without being rude) by pretending to have an emergency call that your goldfish got eaten by the neighbor’s cat and you have to run home to make the funeral. (Hypothetically of course) I also wouldn’t be writing this blog right now, which is obviously the most important difference.
How would you interact with others?
Obviously there would be more one on one contact since there wouldn’t be such thing as facebook, email, twitter, texting, or ,my personal favorite, Instant messaging, or as I like to call it IMing. That would also mean that people would also have conversations of more substance than just, “Hey” “What’s Up?” “NM” “Cool.”
Do you think that your relationships then would differ from your present relationships?
I do, I think that I would have fewer friends, since it would be harder to stay in touch with so many people, but would also be closer to the friends that I would have, since I have to make the effort so you would want to make it worth my time. I also think that relationships with my family would be closer because I would have more free time meaning more time to spend with them.
Which time period would you prefer and why?
I like the time period that we live in because you can learn everything from one little device rather than having to learn by trial and error. I also think that everything that all the positives of not having a technology can still be experienced with it as long as you don’t let it run your life. I also think that it can lead you to meeting people that you otherwise wouldn’t have met by finding them through common interests on the internet, leading to closer relationships. (Although, the government wouldn’t be able to track my every move as easily in the other option.)
