Hurrican Katrina
The picture above was a scene during Hurricane Katrina in Ft. Lauderdale FL. This is the first disaster in the United States that i remember (excluding terrorist attacks) that had a huge impact on everyone, not just where the hurricane hit. I remember my mom telling me about how there was a huge storm heading towards Florida. Being only 8, I didn't really understand what exactly a hurricane was and how it would impact everyone. This is the first time i remember people from all over the country coming together together to raise money for the victims of hurricane Katrina. At school there was donation boxes in every room and fundraisers. My neighborhood friends and I had a lemonade stand the night of a UK football game (when we were decent) because we live a block away from the stadium. We raised over $300 for the red cross and the bank doubled it and sent it to the victims. After Hurricane Katrina, i feel like our country united even more and now every time there is any type of tropical storm, even if its not as bad as Katrina, people try to help as much as they can. Even though Katrina was a disaster and many people lost their lives, it bonded our nation and we came together to help them.
