Right now at 7:25 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, it is 1:25
a.m. in Paris, 4:26 p.m. in San Francisco, and 11:26 a.m. in Sydney. Right now
while I am sitting at my computer someone is being born, someone is dying from
AIDS, someone is finding out that they have a terminal illness with three
months left to live, and some child just got hit by a car. The sky's the limit
when it comes to possibilities about what is happening right now considering
that there are almost 7 billion humans on the planet. Isn't it fascinating to imagine
what those other almost 7 billion are doing at this very moment? Maybe someone
just got hired, someone just got married, or someone just ended their
marriage. For all I know, maybe someone
I care about is experiencing one of these activities but I am sitting at home
working on my computer instead of experiencing life which I realize I should do
a lot more of.
Every second that passes by is a second that counts in the
giant clock of life and if your life is spent doing something that you don’t
want to be doing then there is no point in that type of life at all. This
prompt reminded me of what I hear quite often among successful students…
“So, what do you want to be when you grow up?”
“Oh, how about medicine or law, those pay a lot, don’t they?”
Yet, what astounds me the most is that students who are
either not talented at either of these subjects or do not enjoy them in the
least typically pursue them the most making for a very unhappy world. Not to go
off on a tangent, but I saw a map yesterday that was astonishing. It depicts
the happiness level in each US state measured by happy or sad tweets.
Anyway, it reminded me that every minute counts and saddened
me that Kentucky has a very poor quality-of-life. So next time you consider
your future, ensure that you know that every minute counts.
