Advice

"Expect nothing". These two words resonated with my group and me once our coordinator told us this on the first day of orientation before going to Tajikistan. She encouraged us to leave our assumptions behind, allowing for a trip filled with memories and not expectations. This mentality allows for crap happen and an easier way to get over it. You’re not tied down to an idealistic idea of what should happen and you’re not mortified by what doesn’t happen. You deal with what does, whether it is good or bad. What I find the most beneficial of this idea is the appreciation of the good that happens. It makes an amazing experience even more memorable because you didn’t expect it to happen, but it still did. This mentality allows for something spectacular to happen, and for you to fully appreciate the magnitude of the amazingness and not measure it up to expectations.
