October 12, 1968 marks the opening of the 19th Modern Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City. This was a great event opportunity for the Olympics to appeal to all cities and nations. As a society, we tend to favor larger and more important nations as the stage for important events.
This set the precedent for many other nations to host world competitions. For example, South Africa won the bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2010, and Rio de Janeiro will be the first South American city to host the Olympics in 2016. Had we continued to give bids to only the richest nations, events like the Olympics may not have such an impact on our lives.
