I chose October 12th.
Many of us have heard the following rhyme: In 14 hundred 92, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
Well what many people aren't aware of is that the date was specifically October 12th, 1492.
Exciting right?!
Basically, after sailing with his crew for quite some time, Columbus landed in the Caribbean specifically the Bahamas. However, he believed himself to be in East Asia. And since we've all taken history, we all know what happens next: a lot of exploring and other stuff I shamefully don't recall from world history.
Columbus' discovery of the Caribbean didn't immediately send a whirlwind of change throughout civilization. When he first discovered the area, he thought his biggest "treasure" to bring back would be the natives. Unfortunately for him, Queen Isabella of Spain decided not to open the New World to the slave trade, thus crushing Columbus' plans.
Nevertheless, it affected the entire New World. After Columbus began sailing, other countries decided to jump on the bandwagon and follow suit. However, does Columbus' discovery of the Caribbean directly affect me? No.
Now for the last question about whether or not I appreciate it, I would say "meh." Based on the minimal information I have on Columbus, I didn't exactly like him as a person, which makes me depreciate the situation a little bit. However, I do not loathe it.
