Today, October 11, 2012, marks the first International Day
of the Girl.
The International Day of the Girl is an international
observation day declared by the United Nations and began as a project of Plan
International’s Because I Am a Girl campaign.
Though October 11 will be annually observed as a day in
which we support girls and women’s rights, this day in 2012 is the beginning as
well as a representation of the culmination of what Plan International in conjunction
with Canadian delegation was able to achieve at the UN General Assembly in
December of last year.
The observation of this day supports the awareness of
inequality that girls around the world face in this day and age. It brings
light to the horrors girls must face, from child marriage to prostitution, and
the lack of education and medical care girls receive.
The real first world problem is our blissful ignorance. We
are able to live detached from reality and sail through life with romanticized
notions of the world around us by living in a first world country full of opportunities
all races and genders.
The International of the Girl not only supports the
advocating of equity between genders in third world countries, but also the
resolutions of struggles American girls face today, such as with eating
disorders and body dysmorphic disorder. In fact, www.sevenly.org, is currently supporting
Mercy Ministries, which helps to provide various amenities to girls struggling
with an eating disorder.
The inaugural date of the International Day of the Girl
brings the expedited hope of a better future for girls who cannot help
themselves.
