Three writing prompts I find most intriguing are:
- Which fictional characters are your favorites and why?
- If you could go back in time, what would you tell your younger self?
- Say you can write your own story of your life. What kind of world would you create for yourself?
As much as I would
love to spend hours writing answers to all three, I'm going to save everyone the annoyance and opt to answer question one.
I believe that the fictional characters we hold dearest to our hearts say a lot about who we are. I love when I can get one of my friends to read a book I love and ask them who their favorite character was. I love seeing if I could have expected who their favorite character was, and if I learn more about my friend when they tell me. In most cases I can usually tell who the character would be and why: almost always, it's a character who is very much like the person who chose them. It would be wonderful if I could say I'm exactly like my favorite characters, but I am far from the wide spectrum of wonderful made-up people I love the most. To (finally) name a few, my favorite characters would be:
- Augustus Waters from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
- Remus Lupin from Harry Potter
- Charlie from The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
- Mark Cohen from RENT
- Tobias "Four" Eaton from Divergent by Veronica Roth
I'll stop the list there because if I didn't I could list many, many more. In a sad sense, they are all male characters because I've found, in the books I read or the movies I watch, the females are played off to be weak and incapable of living without a male in their lives which is not something I want to read about. My favorite characters are widely different from each other. Any sort of similarity in them is broken by one for being different than any other label I could put on them. I love Augustus Waters (from
TFIOS) because his character is so beautiful and well-rounded and so fragile and it's terribly hard to put an explicit explanation to my love for him. Lupin from
Harry Potter is my favorite because his character is kind and so full of love but has a darker side full of self-loathing but still finds the ability to be such a wonderful person. Charlie is my favorite from
The Perks because my first time reading it, I was in seventh grade, the prime time to "discover" yourself and to try to fit in, and I felt a connection to Charlie. He is introverted and shy but finds the courage to participate and for an introvert like me, it gave me hope. Charlie is also so innocent and has such a pure love for Sam, the girl in the book, that it's hard not to like him. Mark from
RENT is my favorite for reasons mostly because he has the best lines in the whole movie, but also because his character is beautiful as well. He is a filmmaker with so much to say about life because all of his friends are dying and he has no idea what he's going to do when they're gone; and he's breaking inside but it's a beautiful brokenness and it's too much to bear with everything around him. Finally, Tobias from
Divergent is my favorite because he is so brave and strong without being overbearing or arrogant.
I'm going to stop there because if I don't, I'll blubber on and embarrass myself further. Also, I'm sorry if there are many run-on sentences because this topic makes me so happy that I don't have enough energy to worry about proper grammar (even though I did try very hard to care this time.)
