On October 14, 1982, President Reagan declared a war on drugs. He was trying to get rid of drug use in order to prevent public problems, but the bill just enforced penalties for drug offenses.
Critics say this was bad because it did nothing to lower the amount of available drugs. Supporters say this was good because it reduced teenage drug use.
This 'war on drugs' ultimately was a financial burden for America, but it did have a beneficial outcome because the first lady, Nancy Reagan, developed the "Just Say No" campaign, which is still around today.
I don't particularly appreciate or loathe this event because it doesn't directly affect me, but I believe it was an important historical event that still has effects on today's society.
