- Get yourself a car, nothing will make you focus on driving better than taking your own $20,000 dollar investment screaming down a windy country road in the rain.
- Always wear your seatbelt. Pretty self explanatory, you don't want some pole to jump up and surprise you, then cause you to fly out of your windshield like Superman onto the pavement. Even Jimmie wears his, so yeah.
- Drive all the time! If you don't you will be frightened like your first time, thus preventing you from being a pro driver. Practice does make perfect, so man up and hop behind the wheel and go somewhere.
- Always keep your eyes on opposing traffic. This is a big one right here, folks. Most people believe: "Welp, I got a green light, I can just steer my car that way.", well you can't. Idiots like to floor it through redlights because they are too lazy to check the time and then are in a hurry to drop off their movie at Redbox or something. So in conclusion, even at a four-way intersection, don't just look straight ahead, or you'll be on "World's Wildest Police Chases" when some criminal T-bones you at a greenlight.
- Follow the arrows in the lanes, for Pete's sake! Lexington drivers will never make it in the big leagues such as the NASCAR Sprint Cup when they can't indicate where they are going. I see this everyday, somebody veers from the straight lane over two lanes to the right hand turn lane. Don't do this, people. If you miss your lane, follow the arrows instead of crashing. Cutting people off like that usually is a bad thing, and may result in you getting rear ended, or causing a larger crash, or recieving a moving violation. The main cause of accidents is due to people thinking they own the road.
- Don't be a slave to the speed limit. What? Not follow the law? Well in this case, yes. For one, if everyone around you is going 60 instead of 50 on say, Man O' War, don't be pokey and hold up traffic, step on the gas grandma. Also, I have found that paying too much attention to your speed causes you to look at the speedometer and not the road, causing accidents. So, as a general rule of thumb, go as fast as everyone else but not faster.
- Make everything you do smooth. This especially applies to braking at a light, don't tap the brakes a million times while approaching, and don't slam on the brakes at the last possible second, and give your passengers whiplash and yourself a rear-end dent. Constant, smooth braking is key. Remember from physics the force applied depends on the time the action takes, a long period of braking is smooth and gentle. Also, don't jerk the wheel, just a general tip.
- Be confident! If you aren't confident, you will judge everything you do in retrospect, and worry nonstop about being perfect. Take a note from Jimmie, he's a cocky son of a gun, and he won five championships.
